Many Dominican Republic residents can be eligible for treatment abroad under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). This right is not available for everyone. Unless you have a valid visa, your Dominican Republic health insurance will automatically terminate if you have an existing condition. In most cases a Dominican Republic travelers health affidavit will indicate that you will still have access to healthcare within the Dominican Republic should you need it. One of the most important requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act(HIPAA), is that any healthcare appointments or hospital stays must be covered by the insurance. This will usually cover emergency medical care. Prescription medication and other non-medical services, such as psychotherapy, may be covered. Before travelling to the Dominican Republic ensure you ask your insurance company if your medications and appointments are covered by the policy. Also remember to ensure you read the fine print of your policy carefully so you know exactly what is not covered. There are many options available from major international insurance companies. Another important requirement of the HIPAA is that a health care practitioner shall be contacted twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. This can only be a requirement if you consult with a health care practitioner on a private health care provider's private list. The Dominican Republic government does not recognise private medical practitioners therefore all medical treatment and medication must be provided by the Dominican Republic government approved HMO or PPO system. You will be required to comply with this requirement. Your medical insurance will be terminated upon your arrival. Once you have received all the documentation necessary to travel to the Dominican Republic, it is advisable to complete the necessary visa paperwork. There are three main sources from which you can obtain a visa, they are the Dominican Republic government, the embassies of the country of your origin and US consulates. As long as your passport has been approved by the Passport Office, you can also get a visa at the nearest airport. The process of obtaining a visa for yourself and family is much faster than processing an individual visa. This is another reason why the Dominican Republic is such a popular choice for family travel. Remember once you have arrived in the Dominican Republic, you will still need to obtain a health insurance (hipaa) before entering the country. A Dominican Republic Health Insurance Card (HOCC) will be issued to you. You will need your date of birth, social security number, and other information. Many Dominicans are comfortable with the idea that they can travel abroad for medical treatment. You don't need to worry about it because the Dominican Republic insurance (hipaa) will protect you. |
